In this modern age, reality is no longer restricted to the realm in which we live. Since technological advancements over recent years, the boundaries of the world we live in have been extended through the digital world. Augmented and virtual reality are at the forefront of this rapidly developing trend. However, as the technology becomes more advanced, it is not only becoming harder to differentiate between them against the real world but it is difficult to distinguish the differences between them. Virtual reality is a completely immersive experience that replaces a real-life environment with a simulated one. It blocks out the real world, as you engage within the virtual one it is able to create. This means it is hard to differentiate between the virtual and real world, for users. Virtual reality can be utilised by VR headsets or by immersive spaces, such as the ones we provide. These create a full 360° experience, where you are completely transported to another dimension, with endless possibilities. VR is becoming increasingly popular for its range of benefits, from being able to support educational and professional training, establishing safe learning simulations and its long-term cost-effectiveness. Whilst the initial cost for the equipment may be high, in the long run it reduces costs as training can be carried out in-house, you no longer need to travel to work meetings and more- it can save you both time and money in the future.

Augmented reality, unlike virtual, incorporates the real world and it adds digital elements to a live view. Often this is done by using the camera on a smartphone/tablets or AR wearables, and users can control their presence in the real world. AR differs from virtual reality, as it can enhance both the virtual and real world, whereas VR only creates and projects a fictional reality. This means that AR users can clearly distinguish between both worlds. AR is already more than likely present in your life, from social media filters to being able to virtually test make up shades on your own phone, to witnessing projected advertising illusions on bus shelter windows. AR is effective as it can improve customer experiences and drive user engagement. It also offers a more unique user-experience and can enhance brand awareness. This is because it can blend both realities and allow for customers to bring their online experience to life around them, without even having to leave their seat.

AR and VR used to be mutually exclusive concepts, however they are slowly beginning to merge in a new era of reality-shifting and manipulating technology. This collaboration is sometimes called MR or XR, and it is primarily VR headsets that have combined AR features into their use. Overall, this merging consists of VR beginning to incorporate real life equipment and activities in its use, such as being able to use an actual keyboard and mouse for controlling virtually projected screens. Both of these realities open a whole new world of opportunities, of which businesses are keen to take advantage of;  since they are highly accessible and relatively easy to incorporate into their current processes, apps and marketing.
